plumbing repair in attic have to cut long 1" pipe cause cannot get in attic?

cutting at joint and is their a union to splice into 1" steel pipe after i cut it

To properly cut and re-thread steel pipe you need a pipe cutter, pipe threader, and pipe deburrer…none of which are cheap. If you know how long a piece you need, have the supply house or home center cut and thread the piece(s) for you. I think Lowes does this for little or no extra cost. If you have a lot of threading to do, try renting the cutter, threader, and de-burrer, plus a pipe vise. [You will also need cutting oil for the threading process.] You then use couplings, not unions, to rejoin the pieces. [Unions are used to join two pipes when you cannot turn one of the pipes because it is already in place.] Use standard forged couplings, not the cheap smooth "merchant" couplings which often come with pipe lengths. Be sure to use high quality "pipe dope" to join the pipe/fittings. It comes in tape or brush on types, depending on your preference, the type of pipe, and what the pipe will carry [water, gas, etc.]

Curious about electrical and plumbing?

Plumbing Repairs 5 Comments »

My husband and I are considering purchasing the house we currently rent but I think it needs new electrical and some plumbing repairs. Can anyone guestimate how much it would cost us to pay someone to rewire a 1400 s.f. single story house? Some plumbing needs replacing too.
The house is about 30-35 years old. It has never been updated with the ground type outlets and we often have things short out and break on us after being plugged in. For example, there is one outlet that has what looks like an updated outlet with the three holes and when we plug into it, the house blacks out and the item breaks, i.e, our vaccum cleaner! We've lost two laptop batteries and cords using a 2 hole-to-3 hole converter on other outlets in the house. It sucks having to pay attention to what kind of plug something has before we purchase it.

John Himself nailed it:
Rewiring a house is very labor intensive and fraught with surprises as the wire is concealed in walls. Usually a service entrance and panel upgrade is sufficient. Seek advise from reputable contractors and get estimates.

If McCain is Elected, Will The Cost of Plumbing Repair Be Less?

Plumbing Repairs 8 Comments »

Plumbers, those who are licensed, earn an average of $75.00 per hour.
Since Joe the Plumber insists that his taxes will be lower under McCain, will it cost less to get my crapper fixed if McCain wins?

Shouldn’t free market capitalism assure that my crapper bill would be less since Joe’s expenses would be less?

Well, if you think your god Obama can do better, let me know when I should start believing in his lies.

I need an estimate for a plumbing repair?

Plumbing Repairs 5 Comments »

I just rented a house and someone had come in and cut out all the copper piping to everything in the house. We have no piping or water running to anything in our house. They cut everything out to the faucets in the bathroom and all the faucets in the kitchen. I need a plumber to give me an estimate on about how much it would cost to repair and replace these pipes, but not with copper piping with pvc or the plastic piping.

that depends on the amount and length of piping and the size of course has a factor but a rough estimate i would say $3500

Tax help: can I deduct home repairs not covered by insurance?

Plumbing Repairs 6 Comments »

I have a $4,000 bill for plumbing repair on my primary residence. This was not covered by insurance, but the repair was necessary to make the home habitable. THANKS!!

If the repair was due to a sudden casualty, such as vandalism or an accident, you can deduct the amount that exceeds 10% of your adjusted gross income for that year, less $100. If the repair does not cover all the damage caused by say frozen pipes that exploded and spoiled your floors and walls then your loss is more than $4000 . If your adjusted gross income is, say $30,000 you would have a deduction of $900.plus any other damage, even if it could not be repaired.

If the repair was due to gradual deterioration and you do not use your home for business, you can't deduct it, If it makes a permanent improvement such as adding new fixtures, you can at least add it to the cost basis of the home.

The state paid for the first month and security deposit of the the house but I still couldn't give up my other place because the repairs were not done. I paid the rent and I tried to do the repairs the best I could plus I tried to hire license plumber and electrians but I didn't own the house they wouldn't come out. The owner didn't want to fix it. The owner was going to let me buy the house. It was going to be my first house. I was being harassed by lot of people and I had them on tape and I had proof of the things to back me up but there was a fire after I wrote to the President and I lost everything expect a few important tapes. Please give me some answers no one has been answering anything for me. The owner of the house worked for the city and his friends were the inspectors and law enforcers so who can I trust? and Where can I go for the help to get the answers? Plus I had proof of the miss treatment of my son when the police and other lied so my son was taken away and put in abus

Sounds like you have multiple issues… The only yhing I can think of is to contact your congressman and hopefully he/she can help. I'm sorry that you're going through this hell.

I am buying my home, credit rating is poor and I need some plumbing repair and I dont know who would possibly be able to help me. Are there agencies that provide assistance. I have only one bathroom and this is urgent. I don't know what to do and I don't won't to lose my home. circumstances beyond my control, cause me to sign a forebearance to keep from foreclosure. If I miss a payment I guess they will foreclose. Need advise

Call local plumbers and ask if they have or will be able to do a payment plan in installments. Also ask if they do free estimates before they do the job. Work out the details and hopefully you'll have proper working plumbing and not be stressed out about losing your house. Best of Luck.

PS. You can call your local Habitat For Humanity office and see if they recommend anyone.

Is it normal to take costs such as a plumbing repair out of the rent?

Plumbing Repairs 9 Comments »

My gf thinks that we have commited some crime and is attacking me like crazy because we had a plumbing problem, and the landlord said to just take care of it, and take it out of the rent, which isnt a problem at all. Am I really wrong in doing this?
The Plumbing issue was a simple drain clog that required the plumber to drill a small hole into the offending pipe in order to get to the clog. Landlord knows he is responsible.

It depends on what caused the plumbing problem ? In my lease ,I pay cost or will take off tenants rent for this service .Unless my plumber tells me it was for tenant damage .Keep in mind I have a regular plumber and a honest one .90 % of the problems were old pipes , so I replaced at my cost. If it was hair ( keep stainer in Bathroom sinks & tubs ) or if grease blockage, diapers, ect. , No the tenant was totally charged. But it is in my lease .If landlord & tenant are happy that great .It's nice to have a good understanding with each other .

how to do my own repairs on plumbing?

install plumbing

I agree with motox. Go to Home Depot and ask them lots of questions. Then go to Ace Hardware and ask them more questions. Of course, you want to talk to the guy that's done it before and used the products he's recommending. Then you should have an idea about what you think will work.

Take lots of pictures of the "problem" and take those with you when you talk to the guys at the hardware store. Many times I've walked into the store with tens of pictures on my crappy little cell phone camera that have helped immeasurably to explain a situation — especially one where I don't know the correct terminology.
