Plumbing: Repair a Toilet

Toilets may seem like a complicated machine, but they are really quite simple. When you discover that you have an issue with your toilet, you may find that you are overwhelmed with worry. There is nothing to worry about, though. The most difficult part to repairing a toilet is identifying the part that needs repaired, and even that can be viewed as quite simple. In this article, we will review ways in which you can repair your toilet with ease.

The first step that one should take when they find that it is necessary to repair a toilet, is to locate the shut off valve and use it. The shut off valve is a pipe that allows you to shut off the water supply to the toilet. Turning this off prior to the start of repairing a toilet will reduce the chances of your toilet overflowing. An overflowing toilet can do a lot of damage to the home. The water can damage the walls, and the floors. If you simply need to repair a toilet, there is no need to cause yourself to be repairing the walls and floors around it. The shut off valve to a toilet is usually close by. It may be to the side of the toilet, or directly behind the toilet. It will have a knob on it that you can turn. Turn this to the “off” position prior to repairing your toilet.

Once you have turned off the water supply to the toilet, you should then flush the toilet so that all of the water in the holding tank is low. This will give you the opportunity to view the parts inside the holding tank with ease so that you can determine what is causing you issues. Most of the time, when there is an issue with a toilet, the issue lays inside of the holding tank. This is where most of the parts to the toilet are.

Once you are able to view all the components of the holding tank, you should look around carefully for any rusted parts. Rust may cause one or more parts to not function appropriately. If you find that you have rusted parts inside the holding tank, you should replace these parts.

There are many components inside the holding tank. These parts are as follows: flapper, ball cock valve, chain, and various nuts and bolts. Carefully inspect these components and ensure that they are in place, not broken, do not have rust, and are working properly. If you find that these are not in working order, you will need to replace them. Sometimes, you can purchase these parts individually, but it is often best to get the whole assembly. You can usually purchase the whole assembly for a toilet for under $15.00.

It is inexpensive and relatively easy to repair a toilet. The most important step to repairing a toilet with ease is to determine which component, or if all components need to be replaced. Additionally, these components are inexpensive and easy to repair.
