I have some plumbing problems.?
Plumbing Problems November 20th, 2008We have a 2 story home with dry wall ceilings. We have had some leaks from the upstairs bathrooms. 1) How can I find the source of the leaks without tearing out the ceiling. 2) I have very little ability in repairing things, should I call a plumber or a contractor? 3) I think the toilet in one of the bathrooms needs to be reset. Should I do that first or go directly to a skilled plumber or contractor. Please help, I have company coming in in 3weeks.
You could rent a borescope, and make small hole in the ceiling until you find the cause of the leak.

Definitely call a professional, especially for bathroom/leak repairs. It's pricey but worth it.

Replace the wax seal under toilet that is the most likely problem. If you don't feel at ease doing it call a plumber it won't cost much, or maybe a local handyman

To reset the toilet you would have to be able to lift the whole toilet.
Unless you have help or are really strong, I would call a plumber.
To check for leaks without tearing out the ceiling, check all pipes where they go into the floor. If they aren't wet, then, unfortunately, the leak is in the ceiling. Good news is that the leak should be directly located where the ceiling is wet. You could just tear out that area, fix the leak, and fix the ceiling.

I would call a plumber. Show him the toilet and have him reset it. If it is leaking the Johny bolts might be corroded. Something he won`t have to much trouble with. More than likely this is your problem.

My dad's a real Mr. Fix it, but when it comes to interior plumbing, he won't do anything more complicated than fiddling around inside the toilet reservoir.
A plumber might be able to find the leak without tearing up the cieling, but it's quite likely that to do any repairs, a hole will have to be cut somewhere.
Any plumbers that can fix your leak should be able to rest the toilet in their sleep. Most of the money to have a plumber come down goes to just getting them to come, so if you don't think you can do it, it'll be cheaper to have both jobs done at the same time.
Of course, resettting a toilet probably isn't so tough to do… maybe… Who says "Reset a toilet?" What does that mean exactly? You can reset the float valve, or the water flow with just a pair of your own hands. You could even change out the flapper without too much trouble.
What I would do, is call around a few places, and find a plumber that would be OK with you buying materials for them. Then get the stuff for the toilet, see if you can do it, and if you can't just have the plumber finish the job when they do the leak.

call a contractor. but keep in mind that the plumbing was probably done from upstairs which means taking up the floor not the ceiling resetting the toilet might help.
