Plumbing problems. My bathtub is stopped up. Tried Liquid Plumr, did not work, any suggestions?
Plumbing Problems November 21st, 2008Don't want to call a plumber, too expensive.
The most likely problem is the 'U' bend, this is a safety device just under the drain from your bath tub, just put a bowl underneath it and unscrew the two retaining rings, they are usually only hand tight.
You will probably find it's full of your hair and maybe a hair grip, clear it out and replace.

Next, try a plunger. If that doesn't work, I don't know what to tell you…

Get a garden hose and spray it down the drain. Try to seal it with you hand as your spraying it to get maximum pressure. If that doesn't work go rent a snake from Home Depot and shove it down the drain. That's all the plumber is going to do anyway.

if your going to use a plunger, you need to remove the overflow trim. [thats the chrome piece under the faucet]. put your hand over it and then try the plunger. if that doesn't work you can snake it from the overflow. ps the reason you cover the overflow is to seal it so your plunger plunges

I agree with Ron.. hopefully you won't have to do what I had to… pull away drywall to get to the darn pipes.. what a hassel! If you don't find the clog there.. since you'll have the pipes separated, you can pass a 'snake' through the pipes to clean them out. You can get ones of various lengths and all you do is pass it into the pipes until you can't (that'll be where the clog is) and then rotate the metal snake within the pipes. It sort of drills into the clog and you can pull it out. UGH! It's gross but it works!
I have to do that with my bathroom sink.. not looking forward to it at all!
cheers!

we used to use a long coiled up piece of metal. i think it was a snake but i'm not sure. we would stick it down the drain, move it around, and pull up whatever gunk was making up the clog. you could probably find something like this at a hardware store. or you could probably use some wire hangers and straighten them out to use.

Your plug is most likely a lot of hair. Remove the plug by inserting some soft wire with ahook on the end. Push it in as far as you can, twist it a few times and pull it back out, remove the hair and do it again until you do not get any hair. Wear rubber gloves since you used draino. Do not touch the material with bare skin. The wire should be about 4' feet long at the most. A short piece of 10 ga stranded wire from HD or Lowe is easy to get.
